In the last few years age, as a rating factor for insurance products is slowly losing its undisputed place as a leading rating factor. Researchers such as David Sinclair and Valter Longo view age as a disease with cause and effect; a treatable and reversable disease. If they are right, a correct measure of your biological age can be a better predictor of your health and might even replace chronological age completely.
Using biomarkers will certainly raise some ethical questions:

  • Some people that received a bad roll of the dice, i.e bad genes might find themselves uninsurable.
  • Insurance companies will hold private information that will be exposed to cyber risk.
I think that there is a middle ground that can be used for insurance. Instead of looking at the genes themselves Insurance Companies can look at gene expression. Gene expression is proteins that your genes make under a certain environment, and gene expression is up to you mostly, and not your parents. Under such an insurance scheme a member can reduce his premium if he changes his behavior.
Older people might pay less than younger people if they are healthy. Athletes with high BMI will not be penalized. The insurance company might also play a role in your health by giving you the information you need to be healthy. The possibilities are endless, and the future will change how we do things, I suggest that we discuss these issues together.
