The presentation explores how the insurance industry, with its broad spectrum of lines of businesses and risk-transfer fundamentals, could serve as a key player for the needed transformation that the environment on our planet demands. The speaker starts from the links between the insurance industry and the economy, then explores pathways for each of the main strands of economics for the environment.
For each of the strands, and depending on what the economy considers as 'growth' and 'development', there are many different aspects to consider when thinking of the participation of the insurance industry in the view of global change and as an articulator and catalyst of actions that are beneficial for the environment. The speaker makes the differentiation between Environmental Economics and Ecological Economics, particularly in how the environment is considered in the production function, and therefore, how corporations and individuals could perceive different possibilities for each.
As a student of the MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation, and Management at The University of Oxford, the speaker would like to share the identified synergies that emerge when working in the nexus of the insurance business and the environment by understanding the evolution and most recent literature in related matters.
